Shoalhaven Heads Bird Walk
Grade and Distance: - 1.5km return (1.5hr) - easy to medium grade, mudflats, paths and beach walking
Vegetation Types - beach, coastal dunes, estuary, mudflats, sandflats
What to look for:
A number of migratory species, like Eastern Curlews, Pacifc Golden Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits and Red-necked Stints, are all common residents from spring until autumn. Ruddy Turnstones, Red Knots, Double-banded Plovers and White-fronted Chats can also be seen here. This is also a great spot for rarities, with an Inland Dotterel, Sanderlings and Lesser Sand Plovers having been seen here in the past. There are usually good numbers of residents such as cormorants, Black Swans, Red-capped Plovers and Pied Oystercatchers. Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets can often be seen offshore. Keep clear of the sign-posted nesting areas during spring and summer.

Location:
Turn right off Bolong Road into Shoalhaven Heads Road and after 1km, turn right in Bolt Street and left into River Road. Drive to the carpark at the end of River Road where there are toilets and signage about shorebirds. Take one of the tracks to the beach and, if the river mouth is closed, walk along the beach about 800m and cross the dune back onto the river mudflats.
